How We Designed an IGBC Platinum-Certified Green School Campus

When The Pupil Saveetha Eco School set out to build a campus that would serve as a model for sustainable education in India, they needed an architectural partner who could deliver both environmental excellence and world-class functionality. V3 Design & Consultants took on the challenge — and the result is one of the few school campuses in Tamil Nadu to achieve IGBC Platinum certification, the highest grade awarded by the Indian Green Building Council.
The Vision: A Campus That Teaches by Example
The client wanted more than just an energy-efficient building. They wanted the campus itself to be an educational tool — a place where students experience sustainability firsthand through the architecture around them. Every design decision, from material selection to landscape planning, needed to reinforce the school’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
Sustainable Design Strategies
Energy Efficiency
The campus incorporates solar panels for renewable energy generation, daylight-optimized classrooms that minimize artificial lighting needs, and energy-efficient HVAC systems throughout. Building orientation was carefully planned to reduce solar heat gain while maximizing natural ventilation — critical in Chennai’s hot climate.
Water Conservation
A comprehensive rainwater harvesting system captures and stores monsoon rainfall for non-potable uses. Low-flow fixtures, water-efficient landscaping, and greywater recycling further reduce the campus’s water footprint. These systems not only save resources but also serve as living science lessons for students.
Material Selection
Wherever possible, we specified locally sourced materials to reduce transportation emissions, recycled content in structural and finishing elements, and low-VOC paints and adhesives to maintain healthy indoor air quality. The result is a building that is better for both the planet and the people inside it.
World-Class Amenities
Sustainability did not come at the expense of functionality. The campus features smart classrooms equipped with modern technology, a full-sized swimming pool, a gymnasium, dedicated science and computer laboratories, and spacious areas for co-curricular activities. Dining facilities, administrative offices, and outdoor sports areas are all designed for comfort, efficiency, and ease of navigation.
The IGBC Platinum Achievement
Achieving Platinum-level certification required meeting stringent criteria across energy performance, water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, sustainable site development, and materials selection. Our integrated design team — led by Architect M. Hariharan with structural engineering by V. Venkatesan — coordinated every aspect to ensure compliance while maintaining the aesthetic and functional vision.
Lessons for Future Projects
The Pupil Eco School demonstrates that green building is not a niche luxury — it is a practical, economically viable approach that delivers long-term operational savings, healthier environments, and genuine educational value. The strategies we employed here are scalable and adaptable to commercial buildings, hospitals, housing complexes, and other institutional projects.
